U.P. CM Yogi Adityanath Renames Allahabad to Prayagraj

Recently a statement put a storm on Twitter when CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath released it. It stated that, soon, Allahabad would become Prayagraj, its previous name. The new name Allahabad to Prayagraj, this type of renaming is not very new for the citizens of India.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath’s declaration of changing the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj. It has drawn protests from the oppositions like the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. Additionally, receiving a different reaction from teachers, intellectuals, literary persons, legal representatives and politicians in the city of Sangam.

In an earlier period, the BJP government has made several changes in the name of places and cities, for example, Gurgaon to Gurugram, Ahmedabad to Karnavati, and Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and many more.

The venerable demand of fortune-tellers was met shortly as Allahabad. It now becomes as Prayagraj, the new name of Allahabad. It was before the beginning of Ardh Kumbh Mela which will occur in January 2019.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath stated on Saturday, “There was an offer from Akhara Parishad in the convention of Margdarshak Mandal to rename Allahabad to Prayagraj before the commencement of Kumbh of the year 2019. The respectable governor has already given his consent, and if there is an accord, I feel the name will be changed shortly.”

Allahabad was Prayag Earlier

The ancient name of Allahabad’s was Prayag. However, it was changed after 16th-century during the rule of empire Mughal ruler Akbar. He founded a castle near the confluence of the River Ganga and the Yamuna, which is now known as Sangam. Akbar named the castle and its neighborhood Allahabad.

Afterward, grandson of Akbar, Shah Jahan renamed the entire place as Allahabad. But the region near the Sangam, site of the Kumbh Mela, continues with the name Prayag.

The importance of Prayag in Hindu Religion 

According to Hindu religion, Prayag is a place where Lord Brahma performed the primary Yagna. The confluence of two rivers is known as ‘Prayag,’ and in Allahabad three rivers Yamuna, Ganga, and Saraswati meet. Hence, it is the ruler of ‘Prayag’. In addition to this, the chief minister says that is why it is called ‘Prayagraj,'” illumination the sources.

Different people have different opinions, for example, Omkar Giri of Beni Madhav temple stated that Prayag is the emperor of all ‘tirths.’ Further, he added Sangam and Prayagraj are synonyms. Changing the forename of Allahabad to Prayagraj is a greeting move.

The significant impact: views on favor and opposition

On another hand, one of the leaders of Congress, Baba Abhay Awasthi stated that the decision would not make any powerful impact. Prayag lives in the heart even it was Allahabad. The change in name by the chief minister does not make any logic, he further added.

Gaurav C Sawant, an Indian Citizen said, after waiting 443 years Prayag once again gets its name back from Allahabad. Prayagraj is one of the holiest pilgrimage centers of Hindus and confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, he stated.

Many people are also there who doesn’t want this change. Markandey Katju, the former judge of Apex court, is one of them. He  Said, Allahabadis will persist calling the city as Allahabad whatever the new name can be.
