Genna Tatu’s creative journey began when her 75-year-old mother, Janet Tatu, gave her a cat jumper crochet kit for Christmas in 2021. Devoting almost 20 hours per week, Genna crafted a variety of plushies, ranging from gingerbread men and sunflowers to rhinos.
Expressing her passion for crocheting, Tatu explained her fascination with amigurumi, a craft involving the creation of stuffed animals, and how her love for these toys inspired her to start crafting her own.
Realising the potential of her craft, the 26-year-old, reflected on her growing skill and decided to turn her hobby into a business. Recognising a market for her plush creations, she embarked on her entrepreneurial journey, noting the surprising demand for crochet and plushies in particular.
Establishing her venture, “Crochet by Genna,” on Etsy in 2022, Genna Tatu priced her creations from $10 to $200 (Rs 800 to Rs 8000) tapping into the rising popularity of crochet. Despite achieving an impressive $80,000 (Rs 66 lakh) in sales on Etsy within the year, Tatu continues her full-time role as a financial consultant. Juggling both commitments, she dedicates 15 to 20 hours per week to her Etsy business, crafting products and fulfilling orders. Tatu, who has crafted over 400 plushies, recounted spending the entire month of January creating and amassing her collection.
Genna expanded her business by offering custom orders at a flat rate of $70 (Rs 5,832) based on size, a strategy that proved successful for her. Setting herself apart from competitors, she takes a unique approach by crafting products on demand rather than selling pre-made items. Tatu emphasized the special nature of commission pieces, creating personalized and meaningful items for her customers.
Genna Tatu shared a touching experience where a customer sent her late cat’s fur for a meaningful plushie creation. As a young entrepreneur, she envisions taking her crochet business to greater heights, contemplating various avenues for growth and expansion.
