CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday announced Rs 7,500 to 6,700 families in three wards of Tiruvottiyur zone who have been affected by oil spill. This is in addition to the Rs 6,000 compensation announced for the damage caused by flooding caused by cyclone Michaung.
The families in wards 4, 6 and 7 will get the relief deposited in their respective bank accounts directly. Rs 5.2 crore has been allocated for the same.
Compensation for fishermen
The state government has already begun depositing Rs 12,500 to each of the 2,301 families of fishermen affected by the oil spill and Rs 10,000 for each of the 787 boats damaged. Rs 3 crore has been separately allocated for this. In total, Rs 8.68 crore has been allocated for the benefit of 9,001 families.
Kattukuppam, Sivanpadaikuppam, Ennore Kuppam, Mugathuvara Kuppam, Thazhankuppam, Nettukuppam, VOC Nagar, Ulaganathapuram and Sathiyavani Muthu Nagar were the fishing hamlets severely affected by the oil spill from CPCL. Boats and fishing nets were damaged, and fishermen could not venture into the sea for fishing to due to spread of oil on the estuary.
The oil spill was noticed on December 5, a day after the torrential rain brought by cyclone Michaung. CPCL and TNPCB carried out the work of removing the oil, which was expedited as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal.
