Delhi man’s post for supporting roadside barbers in place of expensive salons has internet divided.
Luxury isn’t the same for everyone. For some, the epitome of luxury is indulging in a haircut at a high-end salon, spending no less than three figures. On the contrary, others find luxury in the simplicity of being ‘able’ to get a haircut for a mere Rs. 100. The financial landscape, ever so unique to each individual, shapes our perception of extravagance, proving that one size doesn’t fit all. This realization came to light when a user on the micro-blogging site ‘X’ advocated for supporting roadside barbers over big salons to stimulate the economy. However, this sparked a flurry of mixed opinions from individuals hailing from diverse backgrounds, not merely due to a reluctance to support small entrepreneurs, but to emphasise the importance of maintaining a balance between the two.
The discussion unfolded when Shubho Sengupta shared a picture of a roadside barber in Delhi with the caption, “Rohtas Singh charges Rs 50 for a haircut, at a pavement shop in GK2 M Block Market in South Delhi. His competition at the same market – Tony&Guy, Truefitt&Hill, Gitanjali, etc charge Rs 700 to Rs 2000. I have been to all places and can tell you with authority they all offer the same quality. Support small entrepreneurs, they may not be CEOs on LinkedIn, but they are the ones who pull the economy up.”

He even shared Singh’s contact number to extend a helping hand.

The post gained traction, drawing diverse reactions. One user criticised the idea, stating, “You are basically rewarding squatting on government property and evasion of GST and taxes. On a public forum. Wah.” Another defended high-end salons, saying, “Tony and guy not only give just a haircut but a complete luxurious experience. They have salon in most expensive malls , they pay heft rents, clean hygienic shops, well mannered staff who have good hygiene and doesn’t smell like pan masala.”

So basically you’re saying it’s better to patronize folks setting up shops illegally on the footpaths than to go to salons that have legally acquired space, equipment and skilled staff— Farhad Tarapore (@farhad_tarapore) December 5, 2023

A third user succinctly summed up the debate, “Support small businesses- yes. Support businesses being run illegally on encroached lands/footpaths without paying taxes- No.”

In the midst of the clash, there were those who stood in solidarity with the OP. “Well said. The backbone of thriving economies isn’t celebrities but the small biz owners grinding daily. Support them and lift your community, too,” chimed in one supporter, while another affirmed, “Good message. I always get my haircut and moustache trimmed at local roadside shops.”

All in all, the debate revolved around the perceived flaw in comparing these establishments, given the inherent differences in the services they offer.
