BENGALURU: Befriending a stranger on Facebook and messaging her proved costly for a 69-year-old man. A few days after chatting, the woman made a video call to him posing in nude. Later, some miscreants threatened him with videos and photos and extorted Rs 1.7 lakh.
Saajan (name changed), a resident of an apartment in Gunjur near Whitefield and retired private sector employee, told police that he and a woman, having a Facebook profile of Komal Sharma, used to chat on the Messenger app.
According to Saajan, on November 21, Sharma tried to make a video call with him. When he disconnected it, he got back-to-back calls. When he picked up the call, he found a woman posing in nude and talking to him inappropriately. Saajan disconnected the call after warning the woman not to contact him again. After some time, the woman sent him a video clip and photo capturing him and her, and threatened to upload them on social media if he didn’t pay her money.
Saajan refused to pay her and disconnected her calls thereafter. He also blocked her on the Messenger app.
The next day, Saajan got calls from two unknown numbers. The callers claimed his nude photos and videos have been uploaded on video-sharing platform YouTube and demanded Rs 76,500 from him if he wanted them to be removed.
Saajan panicked and transferred the money to a bank account given by the caller. Later, another miscreant demanded Rs 94,000 more. He transferred the amount in a couple of transactions through a digital payment application. The miscreants tried to fleece more from him by threatening him continuously over the next few days. Finally, Saajan decided to approach police.
A senior officer said: “Based on Saajan’s complaint on November 27, we registered a case under the Information Technology Act and IPC sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly including delivery of property). Saajan chatted with the woman for a few days during his free time. We are not sure if he posed nude during the call. He claimed that his videos were morphed. We’re probing into it.”
