The village named Ramdeo-ki-Basti is located in Jaisalmer.
The unusual tradition has been followed in this village for decades.
Every village in our country is known for its special customs and traditions. There are a few traditions in particular villages that may come as a surprise for many. One such village is Ramdeo-ki-Basti in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where a man gets married twice. Every man in the village has two wives and the reason for the same is a tradition that people have been following for years. The unusual tradition has been going on for decades. While polygamy and polyandry marriages are banned for Hindu communities, as per the Hindu Marriage Act in India, this village witnesses two marriages for a man owing to their age-old ideologies. Ramdeo-ki-Basti is a small village with a population of 600 families. It has men living with more than one wife in the same house. In what comes as more shocking news, none of them is privileged to enjoy basic human rights and equal treatment.
According to a report of The Times Of India, people in this village believe that the first wife of any man can never conceive and even if it does happen, she does not give birth to a son but a daughter. This has led to an unprecedented rise in the number of daughters in the village. This is the reason why men, in the village, marry twice as they want a son to be born in their house. Simply put, the second wife is responsible for the future heir.
While the tradition continues even today, the young and educated generation do not consider the ritual right and do not believe in it completely. Villagers following the tradition believe that they were left with no option but to remarry because the first wife was unable to conceive. At the same time, a few others were informed that their first wife gave birth to a daughter. They married twice as they desired a son.
