Members from two families were on the way to Ghatagaon from Ganjam district to offer puja at Maa Tarini shrine when their minibus collided with the truck
A minibus rammed into a parked truck from behind leaving eight people from two families dead and several others injured in Odisha’s Keonjhar, early on Friday morning. The impact of the collision was such that the bodies of the deceased and the injured were scattered along the road.
The accident took place on NH-20 near Balijodi under Ghatagaon police station.
Quoting Keonjhar SP Nitin Kushalkar, a TOI report stated that members from two families were on the way to Ghatagaon from Ganjam district to offer puja at Maa Tarini shrine when their minibus collided with the truck. The front portion of the minibus was completely damaged in the incident.
The deceased were identified as Mita Pradhan, her son Akash, and daughter-in-law Lili. Members of another family who died were identified as Bayakhand Gauda, Madan Gauda, Mamina Gauda, Babina Gauda.
The accident took place on the first day of ‘Zero Fatality Week’, a campaign launched by the Odisha transport department to curb deaths caused by road accidents.
In a similar incident last week, at least six labourers were killed and seven others injured after a cement-laden truck with these people on board overturned in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.
“Five died on the spot, another injured person succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The injured workers were taken to a nearby government hospital at Jodamba and later shifted to Chitrakonda,” an official said.
A 52-year-old man from Karnataka on a motorcycle was crushed to death by an unidentified vehicle on Tuesday morning in the Latur district of Maharashtra.
The deceased was identified as Madhav Venkatarao Tarure, a resident of Kotmal village. He had been working as an agent in the Aurad Market Committee in the Bidar district for the last 25 years.
