Pat Cummins becomes the one of the most expensive players in IPL history after SRH’s Rs 20.5 Cr bid at Dubai auction, triggering an ultimate memefest on the internet.
The much-anticipated IPL 2023 auction posed a burning question, and now we have the resounding answer! This year delivered the long-awaited Rs. 20 crore bid that had been on everyone’s lips. Few believed it possible, but in a surprising turn of events, Sunrisers Hyderabad stole the spotlight on Tuesday, turning speculation into reality. Following a heated bidding war against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the 2016 champions secured the services of Pat Cummins, the victorious captain of the 2023 ODI World Cup, for a groundbreaking Rs. 20.50 crore.
However, the spotlight didn’t rest solely on Cummins, as Mitchell Starc joined the club with a whopping Rs. 24.75 crore deal from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), both surpassing the previous record set by England’s Sam Curran at Rs. 18.5 crore last year.
Yet, Cummins’ record-breaking transaction triggered a wave of memes across the internet, leaving Desis in a state of disbelief. The irony wasn’t lost on many, considering Cummins had shattered the hopes of an entire nation in the WC 2023 final, only to become the priciest player in the Indian Premier League.

Pat Cummins is going to earn approx Rs. 1 crore per IPL game that he pays. That’s like Rs. 25L per over. Rs. 4L per delivery. About Rs. 20,000 for every step he takes. The mind boggles. #IPL2024Auction— Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) December 19, 2023
The ongoing auction in Dubai saw the opening gambit coming from Chennai Super Kings, initiating the bidding for the Aussie all-rounder at a modest base price of Rs. 2 crore. Mumbai Indians swiftly entered the fray, escalating the price to Rs. 4.8 crore in a heated battle with Chennai. Mumbai eventually conceded, leaving CSK to savour the prospect of securing their third all-rounder.

However, just as CSK basked in their perceived triumph after acquiring World Cup’s breakout star Rachin Ravindra (Base Price of Rs. 50 lakh) for Rs. 1.8 crore and bringing back Shardul Thakur (Base Price of Rs. 2 crore) for Rs. 4 crore, RCB entered the scene.
In an unexpected twist, Bangalore outlasted CSK with a bid of 7.8 crore. However, a new contender emerged in the form of Sunrisers Hyderabad, fresh from their steal deal for Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga at his base price of Rs. 1.5 crore. The nail-biting bidding war reached a crescendo before the room erupted into applause with SRH’s audacious 20-crore proposal. RCB attempted to stretch its limits further, but it was Hyderabad, and notably their CEO Kaviya Maran, who had the last laugh.
Meanwhile, Cummins, the man who led Australia to a World Test Championship title, retained the Ashes in England and silenced a packed Indian crowd in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad, solidified his status as one of the costliest players in IPL history for the second time. Back in 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders had acquired him for Rs. 15.50 crore, making him the most expensive foreign player at that juncture.
