It is stressful for GenZ to order food.
Prezzo, a British restaurant, surveyed over 2,000 individuals to gauge their comfort levels when dining out.
Going out for a lunch or dinner outing is always special; be it with your friends, family or partner. But once we enter the restaurant premises we often face the biggest ordeal — What to eat? Even if we go to our favourite eatery for a meal, the food menu with its variety of dishes frequently leaves us clueless about what to eat. But if you are a Gen-Z, the problem is likely to be more severe. According to a recent study conducted by the popular British food chain Prezzo, almost every Gen Z that you meet suffers from a coined syndrome known as “menu anxiety,”.
Menu anxiety is a form of stress that gets triggered by feelings of unease when encountering a restaurant menu. Fortune Magazine reports that the restaurant company Prezzo polled over 2,000 diners regarding their level of comfort when dining out. Gen Z was the demographic that reported the highest “menu anxiety,” with 34% of those between the ages of 18 and 24 confessing that they ask other people present at the table with them to speak with the waiters on their behalf because they are too anxious to talk themselves. That is a much greater percentage than the average anxiety level experienced by consumers, who experience discomfort while chatting with wait staff (21%).
In a conversation with the New York Post, Dean Challenger, the CEO of Prezzo said, “While most people look forward to dining out during the holiday season, we know — as our research shows — it can be stressful for some”.
The news portal went on to say that the rising expense of eating out, in addition to the respondent’s concern over not finding anything they like on the menu or later regretting what they ordered, seemed to be the primary factors of menu anxiety. Some even went so far as to state that they would never go out to eat if it was not possible to take a look at the menu beforehand, according to nearly 40% of Gen Z consumers.
Alarmingly high rates of overall anxiety have been persistently reported by Gen Z, impacting pleasurable activities like eating out and travelling, claims the New York Post. According to a recent study by Gabriel Rubin, a professor of justice studies at Montclair State University, Gen Z is more fearful of the outside world than earlier generations.
